Contemprary Tanka Poet Mariko Kitakubo. Reading Performance.

Tanka reading performance oveseas.

Two stages per day, and transportation caused physical tiredness, however, I was filled with energy as soon as I stand in front of the audience and gave my best performance each time. Since I never experienced something like this in Japan, I was surprised but felt glad when visitors with camera came to us when we had a short lunch break. The fans of English tanaka, English haiku and free verse were gathered. I think I did my best to deliver my best performance to everyone.

Moved to Santa Barbara, I performed tanka reading to the poetry lovers who are retired from the work. They are all so bright and brilliant regardless of their age, and among them, I was very much impressed with Ms. Kathabela Wilson's mother who is so beautiful and strong at the age over 90 years old.

performance_2014_03_23_03.jpg Being blessed with good weather, those who are interested in English haiku and Japnase short poem gathered at the tanka reading session held in a beautiful Japanese garden. I felt very gald when I heard that someone in the audience started creating English tanka after hearing my reading performance some years ago.

It always seems to be a new challenge, to do tanka reading for the audience over the microphone. It was also a new experience for me to receive an intereview in English. I received many questions, some of which were tough to answer even in my mother tongue. Ms. Louis P. Jones and I built quite a rapport. She listened to 16 pieces of my tanka, and some times she had tears in her eyes. After the 30-minute recording, the producer and Ms. Louis offered me to be appear in a longer program next time. I was very happy, and hope this leads me into another new challenge.
